Sound and Intonation
Drone-Based Practice
This page gathers listening-based materials that connect drone work, resonance, pitch awareness, and transposition planning. The Basic Expansion Drill is the first working model in this space and will serve as a foundation for additional drone-centered exercises.
Christopher Leuba described this kind of warmup as a way to stimulate blood flow through the lip tissue rather than inhibit it through constant mouthpiece pressure. That idea matters here. These exercises can function as warmups, key studies, and intonation drills, but they work best when the player removes the mouthpiece from the lips after each line, practices with both a drone and a metronome, and listens carefully enough to adjust toward just intonation. They also provide regular practice with large leaps, and the sustained notes can be tongued or slurred depending on what needs the most attention.
